First snow in the southern hemisphere
When winter ends in the northern hemisphere and preparations are well underway for the coming 2010/2011 winter season, in the southern hemisphere work will have been completed already: here winter is arriving and the first ski areas will be opening their doors in early June.
Coronet Peak was one of the first ski areas to start snowmaking. 78 TechnoAlpin lances and 124 fan guns ensure the season starts as it means to go on. Coronet Peak thus boasts one of the largest snowmaking systems in the whole of the southern hemisphere. Three TechnoAlpin pumping stations and one pump station automated by the snow experts supply the 202 snow generators with water. The ATASS control software guarantees uniform snow quality from the peak down to the valley.
The snow generators start operating about a week before the first skiers take to the valley. Director Hamsih McCrostie is assured that every slope will be in perfect condition for the scheduled opening: in time for New Zealand's ski enthusiasts to get their first taste of the new season.
