Long season thanks to snow depot
The Chiemgau Arena in Ruhpolding is one of the best known and best loved Nordic skiing complexes. Thousands of fans gather here to cheer for their favorites at the annual Biathlon World Cup events. Ruhpolding will also be hosting the Biathlon World Championships from 29 February to 11 March 2012. The Arena was fully modernized last year in preparation for this event. The new stadium has capacity for 30,000 visitors. The water to make the snow comes from a 50-meter-deep groundwater well. Three cooling towers bring the water to the perfect temperature to make the snow. The system's pumping plant has an output of 74 l/s. The team of two responsible for the snow-making operations can now enjoy the availability of 13 TechnoAlpin fan guns (2x T60 arm-mounted, 2x T60 tower-mounted, 3x T60 mobile, 4x T40 mobile, 2x M20 mobile). This is sufficient for approximately eight hectares of snow coverage.
Attempts to store snow over the summer started in Ruhpolding back in 2005 in a bid to guarantee an early start to the season. Following a lengthy period of trial and error, a final location has now been chosen for the snow depot. It has concrete walls on three sides. The fourth side is open to allow easy access to the snow. Up to 20,000 m³ of snow can be stored here in the spring. The depot is filled by two T60s mounted on 3.5m lifts. An insulation system keeps loss rates at less than 30%. Thanks to the supply of snow the complex can stay open for business in winter from November to March or April. Not only does the snow depot guarantee an early start to the season, however, but it serves as a valuable standby all winter. It can also be used to improve the condition of cross-country ski runs and ski jump take-off ramps if there happens to be a warm spell or if the snow-making system cannot be switched on due to training activities. "The snow from the depot is easy to work with and the athletes like skiing on it", said operations manager Hubert Neidhardt, pointing out further advantages. The best possible preparations have therefore been made in Ruhpolding for the upcoming World Championship.
