5 October 2008: snowmaking season starts in Bormio

With the sudden drop in temperature at the weekend of 4/5 October, the Bormio ropeway operator SIB Bormio was able to start snowmaking for the upcoming winter season.
Their fully automatic snowmaking system is currently running on the trail sections located between 2500 and 3000 m above sea-level, and the company is confident that the season will open early this year, on Sunday 2 November.
The lowest temperature measured in the region was -10° C, which is ideal for snowmaking operations.
The first snowmaking weekend produced 20,000 cu.m. of snow already, and that is expected to continue. A slight increase in temperature is forecast but the night-time lows will remain below freezing point.
In the meantime, the first natural snow – a good 40 cm – has fallen at altitudes of 2800 - 3000 meters, and the snow groomers were out to create a compact base before the wind could cause any drifting.
The objective behind all these efforts at SIB Bormio is to move the winter opener forward to 2 November.
