FIS Ski World Cup in Zagreb: delighted athletes and happy organizers
On 4 and 6 January, the Sljeme-Medvednica Ski Area was in the sporting spotlight. This was the second time the local mountain for the people of Zagreb had been chosen to host a ladies' World Cup slalom together with the men's slalom, which greatly increased the attraction of the event as a whole.
Victory in the men's night slalom went to the French and new Alpine Ski World Cup leader Jean-Baptiste Grange. In the case of the ladies, who this time started in daylight, the title of Snow Queen was won by the German athlete Maria Riesch. The social highlight of the event was a charity race, in which local heroine Janica Kostelic and skiers from the Alpine hall of fame including Ingemar Stenmark, Alberto Tomba, Marc Girardelli and Franz Klammer took part.
At 785 to 985 m above sea-level, the relatively low elevation of the racing trail made serious demands of the snowmaking system, but TechnoAlpin again turned in a convincing performance in the face of marginal temperatures and sudden changes in the weather. The result, achieved in close collaboration with the snow groomer drivers, was a perfect trail with compact snow offering a good grip. That is probably one of the reasons why OC Chairman Vedran Pavlek was able to announce the good news back in October that Zagreb had been awarded the World Cup slalom for the next four years.
