Arapahoe Basin adds Rubis EVO’s
Arapahoe Basin Colorado is very often the first resort to open in the United States. In fact it’s an internationally watched contest to see who gets “first open” bragging rights that A-basin usually wins. The resort sits in a unique pocket of very cold air with a base elevation of 10,780 feet. For many years the resort has always made snow exclusively with fan guns but last year they demoed several stick guns including (4) T-A Rubis EVO. We know the Rubis EVO to be a great marginal temperature gun that has a very low air consumption but the demo was an adventurous one for A-Basin because they don’t even own an air compressor! They rented a small diesel unit of the size that would power a couple of jack hammers for the test.
This decision was based on a serious demo. Air and water flowmeters documented the performance of the various guns. TechnoAlpin did a lot of analytic work during and after the demo that showed that A-Basin could open significantly more terrain early season with a minimal capital investment and at remarkably low energy cost. The rental air compressor will have no impact on the stretched high alpine electrical infrastructure. Snow quality was considered very important and although A-Basin is a dream spot for early season snowmaking, it’s all relative. If you start making snow in September you will fight the same marginal temperature battle that most resorts will face, except their battle will be in November or December.
Arapahoe Basin is not only an early opener, it last year ran the longest ski season in North America. 237 days. They get on average 350 inches of snow per year and with a top elevation of 13,050 feet, the highest skiable terrain in North America, they hold it well. But the secret to those long seasons are those same early open trails at the base, one of which is now anchored by T-A Rubis EVOs.
TechnoAlpin is very proud to be a part of “The Legend” as A-Basin is refer to. A title that with a 68 year history, it has earned. We will now be watching that “early opener”, longest season contest with renewed interest.
