NSCD Weekend and TechnoAlpin
Those in our company will remember, this Christmas in lieu of gifts to our TechnoAlpin customers we made a sizable donation in their names to the National Sports Center for the Disabled in Winter Park Colorado. NSCD. Then this weekend we attended their biggest event of the year, the NSCD World Disabled Invitational held in great weather at Winter Park. Some of these folks are multi-time Paralympic medalist training for Korea. Many came to this program via Iraq and Afghanistan.
Others are not more than kids figuring out what they can do after life altering accidents. Many of these people came up through the ranks of the program we sponsor. The spirt, the passion of these people is incredible. I hope that comes out in my photos. Without a program, it was hard to match the biographies which came from the announcer, and the racers, but every one of them had a fascinating and inspiring story.
In riding the lift with all my big cameras, a couple asked what I was taking pictures of. Turns out they have an 8 year old autistic daughter in our program. She can say only a few simple sentences and cannot ride a bicycle without a parent holding onto the seat and they never let her near traffic because she doesn’t understand the danger. But she skis every weekend with the NSCD program. Untethered, with remarkable independence. In fact this weekend she was learning tree skiing! The parents said although she can’t verbalize it, nothing has given her greater joy and a sense of accomplishment than skiing. When they announce at 6 am that they are going skiing, the 12 year old moans and wants more sleep but the 8 year old squeals with joy. They could not thank us enough for our gift.
