Snowmaking fills Hotel Rooms…and Lifts.
At a recent seminar called “The Assembly” (SIA, trade show in Denver, 2016), a meeting of lodging and resort interests, it came to light that without building new hotel rooms, or expanding resorts, both difficult these days, there is still a great opportunity. It's clear that weather anomalies like this past December in the East can knock huge holes in room occupancy rates and cut skier visits, but historically both resorts and resort lodging are at near capacity Christmas through mid-March.
Statistics presented showed lots of vacancies and of course lightly loaded lifts November 1st to Christmas. In break out groups, the question of why weren’t families motivated to come skiing for Thanksgiving vacation on into the first 3 weeks of December? The consensus among lodging and many resort folks was that the trail count and snow quality offered by the resorts early season are not perceived as attractive enough.
As the only supplier at the meeting, TechnoAlpin had a different take, and a solution. Many North American resorts have been content to build trail count starting in November to crescendo just in time for Christmas when the crowds arrive. Among some resorts, we see “base quality snow” being made with the assumption that surfaces will be better closer to Christmas. In TechnoAlpin’s opinion delivering anything less than high trail count and good quality snow is a self-fulfilling strategy.
