Water at the right temperature for greater energy efficiency
Snowmaking systems are not just about snow guns. Naturally, those are the most important part, but for good snow output, a whole host of systems need to operate to a high level.
Take the cooling towers, for instance. Their role in the system is to lower the temperature of the water before it is pumped to the guns.
The water temperature is a key factor in the production of artificial snow. That's why TechnoAlpin has designed and developed cooling towers to use in its snowmaking systems. The towers in the Cooltech range have a honeycomb-type cooling system, which works by redirecting the water. All the components are designed to operate at high pressure and under extreme conditions. Water cooling enhances snow output and, with it, the snow guns' energy efficiency: if the water reaches the optimum average temperature, then every snow gun can generate 45% more snow. And that translates into an efficiency boost of 45% based on the same energy demand. In addition, by cooling the water, we enable ski resorts to start generating snow earlier, with major economic benefits.
The Promotur Zoncolan (ITA) resort, a renowned ski area in the Friuli-Venezia-Giulia region, now has a cooling tower with a flow rate of 30 l/s. The water is fed into the tower, which cools it to the ideal temperature for snowmaking. Courtesy of the ingenious honeycomb system, this cooling power can be achieved with a very modest energy outlay. With its high snow output, the Zoncolan resort's cooling tower helps cut energy costs significantly.
So the cooling tower not only enhances snowmaking performance – it also offers considerable cost savings.
