Zauchensee goes for mobile snow guns from the house of TechnoAlpin
Zauchensee, the highest ski area in the Salzburger Sportwelt region and a regular World Cup venue for ladies' alpine skiing, is famous far and wide for its big snowfalls. Even so, over the last few years the management there has invested in one of Austria's most powerful snowmaking systems in the interest of guaranteed snow cover throughout the season.
At the heart of the Zauchensee installation is a reservoir with an unbeaten 450,000 m³ storage capacity. And contrary to the general trend, i.e. permanently located stick guns or snow guns on towers, hoists or booms, the solution adopted at Zauchensee makes exclusive use of mobile fan guns. The main argument for this decision was the presence of an existing network of lines on the mountain with underground tapping points. Since the first contract was signed with TechnoAlpin in 2003, the company has delivered another one hundred underground tapping points with the XE valve, including sixteen last year.
Today Zauchensee meets its snowmaking requirements with over seventy M18 snow guns from TechnoAlpin. In addition, the snow experts have installed remote control with full system visualization using ATASS, which also controls the six pump stations and the eight valve pits required to handle such an extensive network of lines.
In its snowmaking operations, Zauchensee co-operates with the nearby Flauchauwinkel Ski Area, and that presented the software programmers at TechnoAlpin with a real challenge. A hybrid solution was adopted to solve the problem, namely two separate control systems with shared operation of certain functions. One pump station, for example, is connected to both circuits, and twenty snow guns had to be configured to permit them to run on either side of the control system.
18 January was the big day of the FIS ladies' downhill event in Zauchensee, and the result was a shared victory, with Anja Pärson of Sweden and Dominique Gisin of Switzerland tying for first place ahead of the favorite Lindsey Vonn.
