Further expansion in Shahdag (Azerbaijan)
Majestic is probably the right word to describe the mountains in the north of Azerbaijan. The Ministry of Tourism and Culture is having a new center for winter and summer tourism built amidst this magnificent scenery. The project has been underway since 2011. The new tourist resort is aptly named "Shahdag" meaning "King Mountain". The turnkey snow-making system is being supplied by TechnoAlpin.
Another major phase of the development was completed in the summer of 2014, when one of the most powerful pumping plants in the world was installed for the snow-making operations. It has a capacity of 250 l/s with an additional 120 l/s. A cooling-tower system was also installed which has the ability to cool 220 l/s of water to the ideal snow-making temperature. The reservoir holds 160,000 m³ and also boasts an aeration system.
The 2014 development phase also included a pressure-booster station for 165 l/s and a filling station for the reservoir operating at 220 l/s. The system has a central air-supply system. Two compressor plants were built for this, each 2x 250 kW.
The number of snow guns was also greatly increased. In the summer of 2014 alone, Shahdag took delivery of some 70 T60 snow guns. The latest tally of machines at the ski resort is 190x T60s, 20x T40s, 5x Pianos and 2x V3 lances. The system is controlled using the intelligent ATASSplus software.
A ski resort with state-of-the-art infrastructure has therefore been developed over the last few years, just three hours' drive from Baku. Doppelmayr lifts and Kässbohrer snowcats will work side by side with the snow-making system to guarantee fun on the slopes. And modern hotels and a wide range of après-ski facilities will ensure that the enjoyment continues off the slopes, too. The main aim of the project is to create jobs in the region.
