Idre Fjäll: completely prepared for the future

Plan ahead and invest in the future: this could be the motto of the Idre Fjäll ski area in central Sweden. When it comes to modernizing their snowmaking solutions, the operators are leaving nothing to chance and are demonstrating great foresight.

Idre Fjäll is one of the best known family ski areas in Scandinavia. Situated in the province of Dalarnas län not far from the Norwegian border, the resort has 24 lifts and some 40 km of ski slopes of all difficulty levels for beginners and experts alike. The FIS Ski Cross World Cup also stops in Idre Fjäll every year and benefits from the unique snow conditions in the area. Cross-country skiers can also get their thrills on the numerous trails in the resort.

Ideal slope conditions are also among the keys to success in Idre Fjäll. This is why the ski area has been relying on the leading innovator TechnoAlpin as its snowmaking technology partner for almost 20 years. In recent years, the managers have continuously invested in modernizing the snowmaking system to keep up with the latest technical developments and to ensure that they can always offer their customers snow of the highest quality. The renovation work this year also bears witness to the foresight and future-oriented approach of the Swedes. The Idre East pumping station underwent a complete renovation in 2020. The station was first built in the early 2000s. It has now been completely modernized in order to be fully prepared for further expansion stages in the coming years. The renovation work will also allow for a potential tripling of the station's capacity in the future. The system has already been designed with the future in mind thanks to continuous work on both the plans and the dimensions required for snowmaking in the whole area.

But Idre Fjäll has a pioneering role beyond the design of the snowmaking system. The area around the resort often has a particularly cold microclimate. Snow farming has therefore been carried out here during the summer months for several years now, with the ability to build up deposits of between 150,000 and 200,000m3 of snow during the warm season. Thanks to this technology, Idre Fjäll is one of the first downhill and cross-country ski resorts in Europe to begin the winter season every year.
