Saas-Fee: TechnoAlpin snowmaking system in operation for 27 years
Located up to 3,600 meters above sea level, the Swiss glacier ski area of Saas-Fee offers guaranteed snow and enjoyment across 150 kilometers of perfectly groomed slopes. The destination has always been synonymous with technical innovation.
Back in 1998, Saas-Fee opted for a pioneering solution for snowmaking – the world's first fully automated snowmaking system with fan guns, supplied by TechnoAlpin. Today, 27 years later, the last of the machines delivered back then are being replaced.
The key factor in the decision to choose TechnoAlpin at the time was driven by our advanced Quadrijet nozzle technology with ceramic insert. This is set apart by exceptional durability and minimal maintenance requirements – even under extreme conditions such as the particularly aggressive glacier water in Saas-Fee, which would have placed heavy demands on conventional carbide nozzles. In addition to their high wear resistance, the machines impressed with their above-average performance at extreme temperatures – another decisive advantage.
At that time, a turnkey system comprising 47 Baby and M90 fan guns was delivered – a milestone for TechnoAlpin. At the time, it represented the largest order in our company’s history.
Today, almost three decades later, the last of these machines are entering their well-deserved retirement – after around 9,000 operating hours each - some still running with their original nozzles. Technically still in working order, they are now being replaced by state-of-the-art fan guns from TechnoAlpin – primarily to benefit from the further improved energy efficiency and strength in the extreme temperature range of our latest generation.
This project highlights the exceptional quality and durability of TechnoAlpin snow producers – characteristics that not only ensure reliable operation but also make a valuable contribution to sustainability in technical snowmaking. After all, long-lasting systems mean less resource consumption – for decades to come.
The latest technology from TechnoAlpin goes one step further: All nucleators in the new fan guns are equipped with two ruby inserts as standard.. These offer even greater durability, even when exposed to hard water and high operating pressure. They allow the constant production of high-quality snow over many years and significantly reduce the need to replace nucleators.
We look back with pride on almost three decades of trusting cooperation with the operating company Saastal Bergbahnen - and look forward to our future together.
