Carosello 3000: A prime example of efficient snowmaking

The Carosello 3000 ski area in Livigno (ITA) extends from 1,800 to 3,000 meters above sea level. Reliable snow fall is currently guaranteed by a TechnoAlpin system comprising 3 machine rooms and over 100 snow guns. But the foundations that underpin today's meticulous operations were laid in the early years. "With a small facility and limited resources, the correct use of software was vital in order to ensure timely snowfall on the key slopes," explains Managing Director, Stefano Cusini. A priority plan, data analysis and planning to ensure the right amount of snowfall at the right time are fundamental elements in efficient snowmaking. "The SnowManager is an essential tool in this respect. We ensure that the main slopes are covered first and foremost before looking at the other slopes and planning through to the end of the season. None of this can be achieved without sound data."

Sound, objective data also kept everything running smoothly between the snow team and the team of drivers. "We have been using the SNOWsat snow depth measurement interface for quite some time. Up to this point, the amount of snowfall required was based on purely subjective opinions. Today we use objective data. Teamwork has improved considerably since then and the amount of snow generated has naturally been optimized accordingly."

The mobile APP is also a vital instrument as far as Stefano Cusini is concerned. "The app saves us a lot of time and therefore resources. Our team can make any necessary adjustments at any time, and error messages are reported in real time."

Stefano Cusini uses SNOWMASTER to personally stay in the loop. "It keeps me up to date with what is going on without myself or any member of my team having to be constantly on the phone."

The Carosello 3000 software was upgraded to the latest ATASSpro version last year. "There were a few teething troubles with the new interface at first, as you would expect with any new tool. However, we soon got to grips with all the advantages of the new interface thanks to the timely training provided by TechnoAlpin." The option to configure a separate interface for every individual user is seen as particularly positive. Stefano Cusini is also impressed with the new multi-screen mode. "This allows us to keep everything under control and multi-task at the same time."

A detailed snow data analysis is also on the cards for this winter. "We do this every year and every year there is room for improvement," explains Cusini. "We always do our best but we have the potential now to become even more efficient."
