From planning to perfection in record time: Bormio gears up for the Olympics
When the world's best skiers compete for Olympic gold in Bormio in winter 2026, the historic slope will be perfectly groomed – thanks to state-of-the-art snowmaking technology from TechnoAlpin. The ski area in Lombardy, Italy, is the venue for the men's Alpine races at the Winter Olympics and is currently being transformed into a stage for top sporting performance and technical precision.
Ambitious project under high pressure
The existing snowmaking system is being extensively expanded as part of an ambitious project so that athletes can enjoy the best possible slope conditions. With just a few months from kick-off to commissioning, this exceptionally tight schedule demands peak efficiency in planning, production, and implementation.
The call for tenders was published at the end of April 2025 – just six months before the scheduled commissioning date. The concept, plans and a detailed offer had to be finalized just two weeks later, before the submission deadline. TechnoAlpin was awarded the contract for the project, valued at 11 million euros, at the end of May.
Immediately afterwards, the pre-welding work for the piping elements of the new pumping stations began at the plant in Bolzano. Prefabrication saved valuable time for the follow-up work on the construction site. At the same time, the implementation plans for the plant as a whole were prepared in record time: The structural implementation with three new buildings – two pumping stations and a transformer cabin – as well as the delivery of the complete pipeline infrastructure and snow producers were planned in meticulous detail within a very short time.
Precision and speed right down to the last step
In August 2025, 76 pits, 7.5 kilometers of ALPINAL ductile iron cast pipes and 13.5 kilometers of electric cable arrived in Bormio and were laid shortly afterwards. One of the most spectacular project steps followed at the beginning of October: A total of 44 TT10 tower guns and 38 mobile TR10 snow producers were delivered and placed at the designated locations in the shortest possible time using a helicopter.
This was followed by the electrical installation for pumping stations, snow producers and control systems – a key milestone on the road to commissioning. The expanded snowmaking system is scheduled to go into operation just in time for the start-up of the winter season in mid-November 2025.
The project is a prime example of TechnoAlpin's innovative strength, precision and implementation expertise. Within just a few months and in close cooperation with all those involved, a state-of-the-art plant was created that meets the highest sporting and technical requirements – perfectly preparing Bormio for the 2026 Winter Olympics.
