High-performance large-scale expansion in Verbier

The ski resort of Verbier is part of the 4 Vallées (4 valleys), the largest ski and hiking resort in Switzerland, and has placed its faith in the innovative know-how of TechnoAlpin for 10 years. In 2017, the partnership reached a new stage with the snow-making system being expanded by an investment of 9 million euro. The construction work will start in 2017 and take several years to complete. The new snow-making system will be erected in the La Tsoumaz/Savolayre sector and will include numerous innovations. Previously, the sector only had single, older snow guns but these will now be replaced by a modern, fully-automatic system.

The overall project will involve the creation of a snow-making system and the installation of line materials along a slope length of 17 km. Seven kilometers of this project will be completed in 2017. Four fan guns, type TF10 on 4.5 m towers, and 75 V3ee lances will be installed. These lances are particularly energy-efficient and require 50% less compressed air compared to the V3 model.

One special feature of the project is the water concept: A natural lake will guarantee the supply of water for the entire sector. All snow guns above 2,200 m will be supplied by the lake’s own pressure. A booster station will be constructed for the snow guns on slopes at lower altitudes. It will be fitted with powerful pumps and compressors. It will supply only a small section of the total new snow-making system. The water taken from the lake also supplies a hydroelectric power station built by the municipality. It generates electricity and can also be used for snow-making in the winter season. Most of the pipes transporting water to the area have a pressure class of PFA 100, despite their size of DN300, and are made of ductile cast iron. This material is ideal for use in difficult terrain because it can be assembled without welding and also remains very robust, even under very high pressures such as 100 bar.
